William Addison Dwiggins wasn’t the first to design books, posters, or advertisements—but he was the first to call himself a graphic designer. In 1922, he introduced the term in The Boston Evening Transcript, giving a name to a profession that had existed for decades under different titles. Though it took time to gain traction, his contribution shaped the identity of modern graphic design.
